THE ARK OF THE COVENANT
KAB AL AHBAR AND THE ARK OF THE COVENANT:
( HIDDEN IN THE MOUNTAINS OF SYRIA UNTIL THE COMING OF THE MAHDI)
Over the centuries there has been much interest in speculating the whereabouts of the Ark of the Covenant. From this mystery many legends, traditions and myths have developed. However the most realistic and plausible account which has historical and factual backing remains highly under publicized. According to some Rabbinical traditions the Ark of the Covenant was moved below the Temple Mount where it was hidden and protected from the potential intrusions of colonizing and conquering invaders.
CALIPH OMAR AND THE HIGH PRIEST KAB AL-AHBAR
When the Caliph Omar entered the Temple Mount he was accompanied by an Israelite Priest named Abu Ishaq Ibn Kab Ibn Mati. He is better remember as Kab Al-Ahbar. "Ahbar" is a Hebrew Title meaning "Great" or "Strong" stemming from the root Hibr and among the Israelites in Yemen and Arabia was indicative of a highly regarded Kohen Priest.
CLEANSING THE TEMPLE MOUNT
Kab Al Ahbar showed the Caliph Omar the exact spot from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. This was the precise location where the Ark of the Covenant was once stored. Together the Caliph Omar and his trusted Priestly companion set on a major mission to cleanse the entire Temple Mount. Prior to their arrival the Byzantine Church had used the site as a garbage dump.
THE TEMPLE BEYT MAQDIS IS BEYT MIGDASH
During the purification process the Foundation Rock of the Temple was located and cleansed. The Caliph built a fence around it which served as an open structured Mosque. They called it Beyt Maqdis which is the same as the Hebrew Beyt Migdash which refers to the Temple. The name Beyt Maqdis was obviously applied to indicate that the Temple was being restored. Through later renovations the Golden Dome was added and thus it became known as the Dome of the Rock(Kubbat As-Sukhra).
KAB AL AHBAR AND THE ARK OF THE COVENANT
There is no doubt that Kab Al-Ahbar understood the teaching that the Ark of the Covenant was preserved beneath the Temple Mount and considering the extensive effort that the Caliph Omar made in cleansing the Temple Mount and laying the foundation for restoring the Temple itself there can be no doubt that the High Priest Kab Al-Ahbar would have most certainly requested a thorough search for the Ark of the Covenant.
HIDDEN IN THE CHAMBER OF THE WATERSHED
According to the Rabbinical tradition the Ark of the Covenant was hidden in the Chamber of the Woodshed located in the Northeast Corner of the Temple Mount. With a clear and precise knowledge of the Temple Mount and location of the Ark of the Covenant, accompanied by having direct access to a Caliph who by divine calling was given full reign over the sacred area leads to the obvious conclusion that Kab Al-Ahbar was indeed able to retrieve the Ark of the Covenant.
Kab Al-Ahbar was one of the most prominent narrators of Israiliyat (Islamic-Israelite teachings). In Israilyat writings about the Mahdi there are overt clues as to what Kab Al-Ahbar actually did with the Ark of the Covenant after retrieving it from the Temple Mount.
KAB AL AHBAR HIDES THE ARK OF THE COVENANT IN THE VAST MOUNTAINS OF SYRIA.
Kab states that the name Mahdi derives from the fact that he is one that will be guided to a place in the vast mountains of Syria from whence he will bring forth the Ark of the Covenant, the Original Torah and the Original Injeel. It will then be transported from Lake Tiberias to Jerusalem.
1.Kab Al-Ahbar says: “He will be called Mahdi because he will guide(Yahdi) to something hidden and will bring out the Torah and Gospel(Injeel) from a town called Antioch.” (Abu Nu'aym)
2. As – Suyuti mentioned in Al-Hawi...”He is called the Mahdi because he will guide the people to a mountain in Syria from which he will bring out the volumes of the Torah to refute the Jews. At the hands of the Mahdi the Ark of the Covenant will be brought forth at Lake Tiberias and taken and placed in Jerusalem
3.Ad-Dani said: “He is called the Mahdi because he will be guided to a mountain in Syria from which he will bring forth the volumes of the Torah with which to argue against the Jews and at his hands a group of them will become Muslims
4. Sulayman Ibn Isa said: “I have heard that it is at the hands of the Mahdi that the Ark of the Covenant will be brought from Lake Tiberias and will be carried and placed before him in Jerusalem. When the Jews see it, they will become Muslims except for a few of them.”
It was Kab himself who hid the Ark of the Covenant in the vast mountains of Syria. Interestingly Kab Al-Ahbar retired and ultimately died in Homs, Syria. He was reportedly over 100 years old at the time of his death.
The Holy Koran states that the Sign for establishing God's Kingdom on the rejuvenated earth will be the emergence of the Ark of the Covenant, which contains the priestly belongings of Aaron and Moses. It is the Mahdi who will fulfill the sign of restoring the Ark of the Covenant.
And the prophet said to them: Surely the SIGN OF HIS KINGDOM is, that there shall come to you the chest in which there is tranquillity from your Lord and residue of the relics of what the children of Musa and the children of Haroun have left, the angels bearing it; most surely there is a sign in this for those who believe.
