CHRISTMAS TREES ARE NOT IDOLS
THE PROPHET JEREMIAH IS NOT REFERRING TO DECORATING A TREE BUT RATHER THOSE WHO MADE IDOLS FROM THE WOOD OF A TREE
Hear what the LORD says to you, O house of Israel. 2 This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. 3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a CRAFTSMAN SHAPES IT WITH A CHISEL. 4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. 5 Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."
Decoration was what they were doing to the idol. Decorating or Decoration in itself does not constitute an idol. The idol was created by chiseling at wood made from the tree. The Craftsman chiseled the wood into an intricate idol. This occurred after the tree was cut down. The chiseled idol that was made by the craftsman is what was decorated. It has nothing to do with decorating a tree.
Chiseling in relation to creating an idol is that which is used to make intricate features and details which gives the idol its identity. The tree is already identified in its nature and therefore chiseling does not create its form
AXE OR CHISEL? CHISEL IS THE CORRECT TRANSLATION
I was able to confirm the definition of Matzad which is the tool used in Jeremiah and the Axe mentioned in Deuteronomy which is Garzan with a learned and fluent Hebrew reading and speaking Rabbi.
The difference he says is that a Matzad is a small tool used in shaping an object, whereas a Garzan is an axe used for completely cutting through wood (chopping) as in chopping down trees.
THE HEBREW WORD IS MASAD or BAMASAD בַּֽמַּעֲצָֽד
For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his CHISEL/AXE:
THE HEBREW WORD FOR AXE IS GARZAN or BAGARZAN
As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the AXE to cut down the TREE,
When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it to capture it, do not destroy its TREES by putting an AXE to them
THE HEBREW WORD FOR AXE IS GARZAN גַּרְזֶ֔ן
