HONOR THE SABBATH BUT DO NOT KEEP IT

Since Adam and Eve  were created to dwell in the Labor-Free Paradise of the Garden of Eden there was no need for a designated Sabbath Day. However when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden they were now subject to the relentless fate of continuous Labor and Labor pains which in turn created the need for an ultimate Sabbath day of mercy.

Genesis 3:16-19(O.T)

'To the woman he said, " I will greatly increase your pangs in childbearing,in pain you shall bring forth children......." and to the man he said," Cursed is the ground because of you. In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life... By the sweat of your face(brow)you shall eat bread." '

Man was created in the perfected image of God and the Labor-Free Paradise of the earthly garden was to reflect the kingdom of heaven above. In this matter the Holy Quran refers to heaven as the Garden(Jannah) and describes it as " Gardens with rivers that flow beneath." This is referring to the restoration of the self watered Garden of Eden.

Surah 4:13(H.Q.)

' ..... and whoever obeys Allah and his Apostle He will cause him to enter gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them and this is the great achievement.'

Genesis 2:8,10(O.T)

' And the Lord planted a garden eastward in Eden and there he put the man whom he had formed and a River went out of Eden to water the garden.'

Being expelled from the Labor-Free Paradise of the Garden meant that man was no longer favored in the close presence of God and would now be subject to the burdens of Satan and the world. In the Fallen State of expulsion men would seek to enslave each other in an attempt to find relief from the cursed reality of their own burdens. Therefore the command to keep the Sabbath was first given to the Children of Israel in relation to them being freed from enslavement.

Deuteronomy 5:15(O.T.)

'And remember thou was a servant in the land of Egypt and the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm, therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep  the Sabbath.'

The Nation of Israel was to be a representation of the Kingdom of Heaven and that which would lead to the rejuvenated earth. In this regard it was the Messiah Jesus Christ who emerged from among the Children of Israel. The Messiah referred to himself as the " Lord of the Sabbath ". He is the Second Adam who brings us back to the Labor-Free Paradise of the Garden which reflects the heavenly kingdom above.

Luke 6:5
Then Jesus said to them, The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath

When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden they entered a Fallen State and were removed from the blessings of the Labor Free Paradise. In the same manner, when the Israelites were expelled from the Promised Land of Milk and Honey  they lost the Labor-Free Paradise of the Sabbath. Just as Adam and Eve were forbidden from re-entering the garden as indicated by the sign of the Cherubim and the Flaming Sword, the Israelites would be forbidden to keep the Sabbaths of the  land.

Leviticus 26:33-35(O.T.)

'And you I will scatter among the nations, and I will unsheathe the sword against you, your land shall be a desolation and cities a waste. Then the land shall make up for its Sabbath years as long as it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies then the land shall rest and enjoy its Sabbath years. As long as it lies desolate it shall have the rest it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were living on it. '

The Sabbath was only given to the Israelites as a nation. This is why the commandment of Sabbath is addressed to those in positions of authority, a most serious necessity in order to successfully implement the national Sabbath.

Deuteronomy 5:12-14(O.T.)

' Observe the Sabbath day and Keep it holy,as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God, you shall not do any work- you,or your son or your daughter or your male or female slave,or your ox, your donkey or any of your livestock, or the resident aliens in your towns so that your male and female slaves may rest as well as you.'

The above commands are given to those who have authority over the lives of others. The command does not tell manservants and maidservants to stop working, but rather commands those who have manservants and maid servants to allow them to rest. In the punishment of the exile the Israelites would now come under the command of gentile authority with its various governing figures, laws and institutions all of which were NOT bound by the commandment of Sabbath and therefore could not be expected to observe the Sabbath or allow others to do so.By addressing those in authority, national Israel was made compatible with the Sabbath so that even the animals would have rest on the Sabbath because they were attached to the Israelite nation.

If those very same animals were to be sold to gentiles living in gentile nations they obviously would not be afforded or guaranteed the blessing of the Sabbath. The animals were never commanded to keep the Sabbath but were allowed to rest as a result of the commands placed on the Israelite nation. As individuals the Israelites were likewise allowed to rest on the Sabbath because of the requirements placed upon the nation of Israel. Without a divinely mandated and commissioned Israelite Nation the Sabbath is no longer permitted until the appointed time of restoration.

As Islamic Israelites we Honor the memory of the Sabbath with Quranic Sabbath Readings:
