THE HIJRA CALENDAR
(FROM SOLAR TO LUNAR)

THE CHANGING OF THE HIJRA CALENDAR:

(RABBI AL-AWWAL THE FIRST SPRING MONTH)

It is understood that the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca who were known as the Muhajirs arrived in Medina during the Month of Rabbi-Al-Awwal . This historic migration was known as the Hijra. Rabi-Al-Awwal literally means the First Spring Month. The Month of Rabi Al-Awwal is then followed by the Month of Rabi-Al-Thani meaning the Second Spring Month. The next moth is known as Jumada Al-Awwal meanng the First Summer Month. This is then followed by Jumada Al-Thani meaning the Second Summer Month.

The names of the Muslim Months mentioned above are all seasonal attributes which reflect an understood seasonal identification. This clearly indicates that the Calendar presently used by Muslims was originally Solar in regards to its seasonal alignment. The Spring nature of the First Spring Month of Rabi Al-Awwal is further reinforced by the Prophet Muhammad's observation of the Jews Fasting on Ashura at the time of his arrival in Medina. In response to his inquiry as to the reason they were fasting they responded by stating: We Fast in honor of Moses delivering the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. They further stated that Moses himself fasted on this day.

Bukhari Volume 3, Book 31, Number 222:

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

The Prophet came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about that. They replied, "This is a good day, the day on which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So, Moses fasted this day." The Prophet said, "We have more claim over Moses than you." So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast (on that day).

The Israelites were delivered from Egypt in the First Spring Month of which they called Abib(Nissan) and accordingly all related observances were assigned to the First Spring Month as well. This confirms the fact that the Prophet Muhammad was witnessing the Israelites observe a Spring Fast in the First Spring Month of Rabi Al-Awwal.

EXODUS 13:4
On this day in early Spring, in the month of Abib(Nissan), you have been set free from Egypt.

Another reinforcing factor that connects the meaning of the Name of the Month Rabi-Al-Awwal (The First Spring Month) to the actual season of Spring is the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday The Prophet's Muhammad's birth is acknowledged to have taken place in the both the Month of Rabi-Al-Awwal and during the Spring Season. Once again this confirms the fact that Rabi-Al-Awwal is not only a name that means the First Spring Month but was initially aligned as the First Spring Month as well.

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD WAS BORN ON THE 20TH OF NISSAN(RABI-AL-AWWAL) DURING THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD.

Al-Suhaylī has reported that his birth, peace be upon him, was on 20 Nissan.

wadhakar alssuhayli 'ann mawlidah ealayh alssalat walssalam kan fi aleishrin min nisana.

Most traditions equate the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday with Rabi-Al-Awwal which means the First Spring Month. Al-Suhayli states that the Prophet Muhammad was born during the Hebrew Month of Nissan which is the First Spring Month and the Month in which the Israelites were delivered from Egypt. This indicates that Rabi-Al-Awwal and Nissan which were both referred to as the First Spring Months were originally aligned as the First Spring Month.

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD BORN IN THE SPRING:

- Aminah Bint Wahb The Mother of Muhammad (PBUH)

"The delivery day was a great day. It was a dawn which was to remove the darkness of deviation from mankind. Yes! The Prophet (peace be upon him) was born in Spring ..."

MUSLIM CALENDAR CHANGES TO PURE LUNAR AND THE ORIGINAL HIJRA TO MEDINA SHIFTS FROM RABBI-UL AWWAL TO MUHARRAM:

When the Seasonal Muslim Calendar shifted to the Non-Seasonal pure Lunar Calendar the Months no longer aligned to the seasons In the First year of this historic shifting process the month of Muharram happen to appear as the First Spring Month and thus the observance of the Hijra in which the Prophet Muhammad first arrived in Medina now shifted from Rabbi-Ul Awwal to Muharram. Therefore Muharram now came to symbolize the memory of the First Spring Month in which the Hijra originally took place. In this regard the memory of the Spring Ashura Fast also shifted to the Tenth of Muharram.

Therefore Muharram which was the 11th month became the 1st month and the 1st Month of Rabi-Al-Awwal became the 3rd month. In shifting to the pure Lunar Calendar the months became totally detached from the seasons.

The observance of Al-Isra being the Journey to Ascension took place before the calendar shift and therefore it was also impacted by the two month shift and therefore the original Al-Isra shifted from the original 7th Month of Ramadan to what became the 7th Month of Rajab.
